New E-Taxi Service to Launch in Punjab By CM Maryam Nawaz
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed Bilal Akbar Khan, the Provincial Transport Minister, to develop an electric taxi service throughout Punjab, inspired by China’s system. The Transport Department is setting up the groundwork for this eco-friendly project and is currently discussing with several electric vehicle manufacturers.Local media reports that major players, like the Deewan Group and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation, are interested in joining the project. The e-taxi service will initially start in Lahore and other divisional headquarters, with plans to expand to more cities in Punjab. This service aims to provide a 24/7 affordable and eco-friendly transport option. This initiative is expected to improve access to economical travel while possibly impacting jobs in the traditional taxi sector. It is part of a broader government effort to enhance sustainable travel in urban areas.Furthermore, Punjab is also starting to bring electric buses to Faisalabad and Bahawalpur to address major transport issues like the lack of good public transport, traffic jams, and pollution from smog. These buses will be added to the public transport network to help the environment. The government will ensure that only qualified companies can supply these buses. These firms need to be well-established, with a net worth of at least $200 million, make $600 million a year from making buses, and have at least five years of experience in manufacturing large buses.
